NYSC Director General Issues Stern Warning Against Night Travels for Corps Members

Date:

The Director General (DG) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General YD Ahmed, has issued a critical warning to all Corps Members about the strict prohibition on night travels. The new directive aims to ensure the safety and compliance of Corps Members throughout their service year.

NYSC Night Travel Ban: Key Points

Brigadier General YD Ahmed’s recent address has highlighted essential guidelines for Corps Members, focusing on their travel conduct:

  • Prohibition on Night Travel: Corps Members are expressly forbidden from travelling at night. This rule is part of the NYSC’s efforts to safeguard their wellbeing and ensure they adhere to the Scheme’s regulations.

  • Sanctions for Unauthorized Journeys: Any Corps Member embarking on unapproved journeys will face sanctions in accordance with NYSC laws. This measure is intended to maintain discipline and security within the corps.

  • Emergency Travel Guidelines: If a Corps Member must travel beyond the 6:00 pm cut-off, they are required to seek accommodation in secure locations such as military barracks, police stations, or Corps Lodges. The journey should be resumed the following day.

DG Ahmed’s Address at the NYSC FCT Orientation Camp

Brigadier General Ahmed delivered these directives on August 30 during his address to the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream Two Corps Members and camp officials at the NYSC FCT Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja. His message underscored:

  • Discipline and Security: Emphasis was placed on remaining disciplined and vigilant. Corps Members are advised to be security-conscious and adhere strictly to NYSC byelaws.

  • Active Participation: Ahmed encouraged Corps Members to engage fully in all camp activities, foster positive relationships, and respect diverse opinions.

Support from FCT Administration

The FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmood, reiterated the administration’s ongoing support for the NYSC. Her remarks, delivered by Mandate Secretary Abdullahi Suleiman Ango, included:

  • Encouragement for Service: Dr Mahmood urged Corps Members to act as exemplary representatives of their families and the nation.

  • Skill Acquisition Programmes: She highlighted the importance of the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, which aims to empower Corps Members towards self-employment.

Orientation Camp Details

The NYSC FCT Coordinator, Mrs Winifred Shopeka, provided an overview of the orientation course:

  • Corps Members Registration: A total of 2,557 Corps Members were registered, comprising 1,098 males and 1,459 females.

  • Adjustment to Camp Life: The Corps Members are adapting well to camp life and are eager to contribute to the Federal Capital Territory’s development.

  • Commendation for FCT Administration: Mrs Shopeka praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, for creating a conducive environment for the successful hosting of the orientation course.

Zero Tolerance for Misconduct

The camp officials have made it clear that any form of negative behaviour, including drug abuse and other antisocial acts, will not be tolerated. This strict stance is part of the broader effort to ensure a productive and disciplined service year for all Corps Members.

Swearing-In Ceremony

The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Huseini Baba Yusuf, represented by Justice Mustapha Adamu, administered the Oath of Allegiance to the Corps Members. This ceremony was attended by the NYSC Director General and other dignitaries, marking a significant step in the Corps Members’ journey.

Conclusion

The latest directives from the NYSC DG reinforce the Scheme’s commitment to ensuring the safety and discipline of Corps Members. By adhering to these guidelines, Corps Members will contribute to a successful and secure service year.
