It’s 8:00 am on a sunny Saturday morning in New Orleans. As I lace up my trusty construction boots and head to the 7th Ward, I find myself among the last to arrive at the job site. What’s unique? This site is powered by high schoolers. Tools are set, protective gear ready, and extension cords neatly laid out.
UnCommon Construction: Building More Than Houses

Applicants from various high schools join UnCommon Construction, earning hourly wages and school internship credits. Upon selling a house they’ve contributed to, apprentices earn an “Equity Award Scholarship” for further education, certifications, or tools vital for long-term career success. Most apprentices log over 100 hours each semester, gaining invaluable hands-on experience.
