Celebrating Latino Entrepreneurship: Cal Lutheran’s Role in Sueńos to Success

Date:

On September 24, Cal Lutheran proudly participated in a significant event, Sueńos to Success: Fueling Latino Entrepreneurship, hosted by the U.S. Federal Reserve in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. This event was a milestone in recognising the vital contributions of Latino entrepreneurs to the U.S. economy, and I was thrilled to be part of it.

Key Highlights of Sueńos to Success

The event kicked off with an inspiring address from Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler. Her insights shed light on the unique challenges faced by Latino entrepreneurs and the potential for growth within this vibrant community.

Following Governor Kugler’s address, we were graced with the presentation of the latest State of Latino Entrepreneurship report by researcher Barbara Gomez. Her data-driven analysis illuminated the current landscape of Latino-owned businesses, showcasing both their achievements and the hurdles that lie ahead.

A Dynamic Panel Discussion

As the moderator for the panel discussion, I had the honour of guiding a conversation that included:

  • Joshua Montes, a research economist with the Board of Governors
  • Claire Kramer, a research economist with the New York Fed
  • Martha Garcia Kampen, CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of St. Louis

Each panelist shared their unique perspectives on the significance of Latino entrepreneurship, emphasising its role in driving innovation, job creation, and economic diversity.

The Impact of Latino Entrepreneurs

Latino entrepreneurs are a driving force in the U.S. economy. Here are some key takeaways that emerged from our discussions:

  • Economic Growth: Latino-owned businesses contribute significantly to the GDP and employment rates.

  • Community Engagement: These entrepreneurs often reinvest in their communities, fostering economic development and social progress.

  • Diverse Innovations: Latino entrepreneurs bring unique perspectives and solutions, leading to innovative business models and practices.

A Virtual Success

The virtual format of the event attracted over 200 individual attendees, alongside numerous watch parties across various Regional Banks. The engagement demonstrated a collective interest in supporting and uplifting the Latino business community.

Local Recognition

In related news, the San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors, led by Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg, presented a proclamation in honour of Hispanic Heritage Month. This proclamation notably included a mention of the Latina GDP study conducted by our Center for Economic Research and Forecasting (CERF). It’s heartening to see our research gaining recognition on such a significant platform.

Media Coverage and Community Response

The local NBC affiliate KSBY covered the proclamation during its nightly news segment, highlighting the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of the Latino community to our economy and society at large.

The Importance of Supporting Latino Entrepreneurs

At Cal Lutheran, we understand the vital role education plays in empowering Latino entrepreneurs. By providing resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities, we aim to foster a thriving environment for business growth.

Join Us in Celebrating

As we reflect on the insights gained from the Sueńos to Success event, I invite you to join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and supporting Latino entrepreneurship. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Educate Yourself: Learn about the challenges and successes of Latino entrepreneurs.

  • Support Local Businesses: Make an effort to shop from Latino-owned businesses in your community.

  • Engage with Resources: If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, connect with organisations that offer support tailored to your needs.

Conclusion: A Bright Future Ahead

Participating in Sueńos to Success was not just an event; it was a call to action. Together, we can fuel Latino entrepreneurship, driving innovation and growth across the country. Let’s honour and celebrate the contributions of the Latino community not just during Hispanic Heritage Month, but every day.

I look forward to continuing this important work at Cal Lutheran, supporting our students and the broader community in achieving their entrepreneurial dreams.
