The higher education sector in the Philippines has reached a new milestone in recognising outstanding institutions dedicated to internationalisation and sustainability. The prestigious CHED Icons Awards 2024 recently honoured several Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) for their exceptional contributions to nation-building through global engagement and innovative practices. This remarkable event took place at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on December 16, 2024, drawing attention to the universities’ dedication to advancing higher education in the international arena.

Among the notable recipients were Saint Louis University (SLU), Philippine Normal University (PNU), Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), Cavite State University (CvSU), and Bulacan State University (BulSU), all of which showcased remarkable achievements in internationalisation and sustainability.

Saint Louis University (SLU): Leadership in Global Engagement

SLU, led by Rev. Fr. Gilbert Sales, was one of the primary recipients of the CHED Icons Award for its outstanding global engagement efforts. Fr. Sales also won the coveted IZN Leadership Award, which recognises exceptional leadership in advancing internationalisation across Philippine universities.

Fr. Sales expressed his gratitude, emphasising that the award was not just for him but for the entire Saint Louis University community. Under his leadership, SLU has expanded its international collaborations, making remarkable strides in global research partnerships, student exchange programmes, and fostering a diverse academic environment. His message was simple yet profound: “This is an award for all of us. Viva Saint Louis University!”

Fr. Sales’ leadership style focuses on resilience, integrity, and transformative growth, which has earned him a reputation as one of the most respected figures in the Philippine education landscape. This award not only highlights SLU’s excellence but also sets a benchmark for other institutions striving to globalise their education systems.

Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU): Excellence in International Rankings

Another notable recipient was Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), which earned the CHED Icons Award for its remarkable performance in international rankings, particularly in the World University Rankings for Innovations (WURI), where it secured the 154th spot globally. This recognition serves as a testament to NVSU’s dedication to fostering an innovative academic culture that aligns with global standards.

NVSU President Wilfredo Dumale Jr. proudly credited the success of the university to the collective hard work, excellence, and unity of its academic community. The institution has consistently placed a strong emphasis on research, innovation, and international partnerships, all while striving to contribute to the nation’s sustainable development.

The university’s strong performance in international rankings is a direct result of its commitment to nurturing students and faculty members who are capable of competing in the global knowledge economy.

Philippine Normal University (PNU): A Leader in Teacher Education and International Collaboration

As the National Center for Teacher Education, PNU was also recognised for its exemplary efforts in internationalisation. PNU’s commitment to global engagement has led to its successful campaigns in global rankings like the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, where it ranked in the 1001-1500 bracket, and WURI, where it secured the 265th spot.

The university’s success is attributed to its continued dedication to producing globally competitive educators who can make significant contributions to the Philippine education system and beyond. PNU President Bert Tuga expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting that it serves as a driving force to push the university further in its mission to shape the future of education globally.

Cavite State University (CvSU): A Commitment to Sustainability and Internationalisation

Cavite State University (CvSU) was also honoured with the CHED Icons Award for its remarkable contributions to internationalisation, specifically for its ranking in the THE Impact Rankings. CvSU has made a mark by integrating sustainability into its academic and research programmes, showing that higher education can play a pivotal role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and economic sustainability.

Representing CvSU at the award ceremony was Ma. Veronica Peñaflorida, Director of the International and Local Collaboration and Linkages Office. Her acceptance of the award underscored the university’s role in contributing to a more sustainable and interconnected world. The recognition serves as a reminder of the importance of international collaboration in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Bulacan State University (BulSU): A Commitment to International Education Standards

Bulacan State University (BulSU), a key player in the Philippine higher education landscape, was also recognised with the CHED Icons Award for its outstanding contributions to internationalisation. While details of BulSU’s specific accomplishments were not highlighted during the event, its recognition reflects its ongoing commitment to improving its international presence and partnerships, enabling it to offer students a world-class education and opportunities to engage globally.

What the CHED Icons Awards Mean for Philippine Higher Education

The CHED Icons Awards are a significant milestone in the development of higher education in the Philippines. The awards recognise the relentless efforts of Philippine universities to integrate international and intercultural dimensions into their educational systems while ensuring that sustainability and nation-building remain central to their missions.

The awards also underscore the importance of internationalisation as a key driver of progress in the higher education sector. By expanding their reach to global markets, Philippine universities like SLU, NVSU, PNU, CvSU, and BulSU are not only enhancing the quality of education they offer but are also contributing to the country’s economic, social, and cultural development.
