Digital NEST Expands Internship Program in 10th Anniversary Year: A Leap Forward for Youth Workforce Development

Date:

Digital NEST, a pioneering nonprofit based in Watsonville, is celebrating a monumental milestone this year: its 10th anniversary. And what better way to mark a decade of success than by doubling the size of its internship program? This significant expansion highlights the organisation’s recovery from the pandemic’s impact on youth participation and sets a new benchmark in workforce development for young people.

Massive Growth in Internship Opportunities

Digital NEST is ramping up its internship programme like never before. This year, the number of interns has surged to an unprecedented 55, compared to 22 in the previous year. This growth isn’t just about numbers; it reflects the increasing demand and interest from youth eager to dive into the world of professional development.

What’s New in 2024?

Founder Jacob Martinez is thrilled about the expanded programme. He shared with Lookout that this year’s interns, aged 18 to 24, are kicking off their roles with intensive training. As part of the celebration of Digital NEST’s 10th anniversary, this initiative is set to provide invaluable real-world experience to a record number of young individuals.

A Decade of Impact

Over the past ten years, Digital NEST has made a profound impact. The organisation has supported over 4,000 students and broadened its reach to five centres across California: Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy, Modesto, and the newest addition in Stockton. These centres focus on rural communities with significant Latinx populations and those that have faced historical disinvestment.

From Ag to Tech: Transforming Lives

One of the most exciting aspects of Digital NEST’s work is its dedication to transitioning youth from traditional sectors into high-tech roles. Through hands-on projects in video production, marketing, graphic design, and IT, interns have the chance to work with real clients, including UC Santa Cruz, local libraries, and various nonprofits. Interns earn between $17 and $20 an hour, which not only supports them financially but also underscores the organisation’s commitment to valuing their work.

Building a Strong Leadership Team

For Digital NEST to sustain and expand its mission, Jacob Martinez has invested significantly in building a robust leadership team. Over the past three years, the organisation has grown its staff from 40 to 120, including the impressive increase in interns. Key roles like Chief Impact Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, and Chief Operating Officer have been added to ensure the organisation’s continued success and growth.

The Future Looks Bright

Looking ahead, Digital NEST aims to double the number of interns once again, targeting around 100 for the next year. The organisation received 550 applications for the current programme, reflecting a high demand and renewed energy in workforce development.

Unique Approach to Internships

What sets Digital NEST apart from many other programs is its dual focus on immediate job experience and long-term career navigation. Unlike traditional internships that often offer unpaid roles and minimal support, Digital NEST provides paid opportunities and comprehensive career guidance. This approach helps interns not just land a job but also progress into leadership roles within the tech industry.

Success Stories and Achievements

The impact of Digital NEST is evident in the success stories of its past interns. Many have secured positions at renowned companies like the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Adobe, and KSBW. Others have ventured into exciting fields such as game design and software engineering, illustrating the effectiveness of the programme in shaping future careers.

10th Anniversary Gala

To celebrate its decade of achievements, Digital NEST will host a gala at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on March 29, 2025. This event will not only commemorate the organisation’s journey but also highlight its future goals and continued impact on the community.

Call to Action

Jacob Martinez’s message to the community is clear: while Digital NEST values donations, it equally needs businesses to hire their talented young people. The organisation is transitioning from being seen merely as a charity to being recognised as a vital resource for workforce development.

In Summary

Digital NEST’s 10th anniversary marks a significant moment of growth and success. By expanding its internship programme and investing in both its interns and leadership team, the organisation is set to continue its mission of transforming lives and driving change in the tech industry.
