ESA Launches Final Vega Rocket on Historic Sentinel-2C Mission

The European Space Agency (ESA) has marked a significant milestone with the launch of its final Vega rocket. On Wednesday night, this historic flight sent the Copernicus Sentinel-2C satellite into low-Earth orbit, concluding the Vega rocket’s impressive career.

The launch took place at 10:50 p.m. GFT from ESA’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the mission was delayed due to electrical issues, which have since been resolved.

Final Vega Rocket Successfully Launches Sentinel-2C Satellite

The Sentinel-2C satellite separated from the rocket’s final stage 57 minutes and 27 seconds after launch. The successful deployment was met with applause in the mission control centre. Stephane Israel, CEO of Arianespace, which managed the Vega rocket, declared, “We have perfectly completed the mission tonight. Satellite Sentinel-2C has been separated on the targeted orbit. It is a full success tonight.”

The Sentinel-2C is a significant asset for the Copernicus Programme, replacing the older Sentinel-2A satellite. This advanced satellite will provide high-resolution imagery, crucial for monitoring land, water, and atmospheric conditions.

Sentinel-2C: Enhancing Earth Observation Capabilities

The Sentinel-2C will join two other identical satellites in a strategic formation. Together, they will orbit Earth at 488 miles above the surface, covering the entire planet’s land and coastal waters every five days. This configuration ensures comprehensive and up-to-date data collection.

Key features of the Sentinel-2C include:

  • High-resolution multi-spectral imager: Captures images in shortwave-infrared, near-infrared, and visible spectrums.
  • Coverage: Each image spans 188 miles of terrain or water.
  • Spectral bands: The imager operates across 13 spectral bands, offering detailed insights into Earth’s surface.

These capabilities are crucial for a variety of applications, including environmental monitoring, disaster management, and agricultural planning.

Vega Rocket’s Legacy: A Look Back

The Vega rocket, designed by Avio and managed entirely by ESA, has had a storied career. Launched for the first time in February 2012, the rocket has completed 22 missions over the past 12 years. It has successfully deployed more than 100 payloads into space, demonstrating its reliability and versatility.

The rocket features a four-stage design:

  1. First Three Stages: Utilise solid propellant motors.
  2. Final Stage: Employs liquid propulsion.

This design has enabled the Vega to handle a wide range of missions, from deploying small satellites to complex scientific payloads.

With the conclusion of the Vega’s mission, the next-generation Vega-C rocket is set to take its place. The Vega-C represents an upgraded version, promising enhanced performance and expanded payload capacity.
