Effective communication is the bedrock of University of Illinois Extension’s ability to share the latest research and best practices with Illinois residents. To support its mission of enhancing lives and livelihoods throughout the state, Extension is leveraging new tools, channels, and expert staff in its communications strategy.
Recently, Illinois Extension has expanded its marketing and communications team with several new hires at both state and regional levels. These strategic investments aim to elevate the quality and efficiency of communications efforts across the state.
Strengthening State-Level Marketing and Communications
At the heart of Illinois Extension’s state marketing and communications expansion is the addition of Sara Olson as Project Manager. Starting in July, Olson brings nearly 20 years of experience to the role, having previously worked at the University of Illinois’ Prairie Research Institute and Carle Health.
Key Responsibilities for Olson:
- Oversee 1,000+ Projects Annually: Managing a diverse array of tasks, including content creation, social media management, graphic design, and digital media.
- Focus on Six Program Areas: Addressing needs in community development, family sciences, and more.
- Enhance Strategic Planning: Supporting efforts related to civil rights compliance, government relations, and administrative needs.
Olson takes over from Liz Smith, who has been promoted to Senior Manager for Digital Marketing. Smith’s previous role involved media communications and content development across various Extension program teams. Her promotion reflects her contributions to refining processes and expanding digital accessibility knowledge within the team.
Regional Marketing and Communications Excellence
Illinois Extension’s network spans 102 counties, organised into 27 units across three regions. Each region has recently welcomed new Media Communications Coordinators to tailor communication strategies to regional needs.
Regional Hires Include:
- Region 1 (Northern Illinois): Yukta Sinha, with a Master of Arts from Dartmouth College, brings experience in urban housing, healthcare, energy, and farming applications.
- Region 2 (Western Illinois): Amy Zepp, a University of Illinois Springfield graduate with over 10 years of experience in special events and marketing, previously served as Extension 4-H staffer in Sangamon County.
- Region 3 (Eastern/Southern Illinois): Heather Willis, an award-winning Extension staff member, has been promoted from her previous role in the communications for Franklin, Jackson, Perry, Randolph, and Williamson counties.
Each coordinator’s role involves developing communication strategies, managing projects, and addressing specific regional challenges.
