It’s 8:00 am on a sunny Saturday morning in New Orleans. As I lace up my trusty construction boots and head to the 7th Ward, I find myself among the last to arrive at the job site. What’s unique? This site is powered by high schoolers. Tools are set, protective gear ready, and extension cords neatly laid out.
UnCommon Construction: Building More Than Houses
UnCommon Construction isn’t just about building houses; it’s about building futures. This innovative organization empowers youth with essential skills, networks, and real-world experience to navigate the workforce post-high school or college. Applicants from various high schools join UnCommon Construction, earning hourly wages and school internship credits. Upon selling a house they’ve contributed to, apprentices earn an “Equity Award Scholarship” for further education, certifications, or tools vital for long-term career success. Most apprentices log over 100 hours each semester, gaining invaluable hands-on experience.
Morning Circle: More Than a Routine
Before the day’s work begins, I join the morning circle—a ritual where each of the twelve teenagers shares personal updates and rates their day’s readiness. It’s a moment of camaraderie and support, where struggles and successes are openly acknowledged and encouraged.
Why UnCommon Construction Matters
UnCommon Construction stands out not just for its building projects but for its transformative impact on young lives. By fostering a supportive community and providing practical skills, UnCommon equips youth with the confidence and competence to thrive beyond their academic years.
A National Exemplar in Empowering Youth
UnCommon Construction’s approach isn’t just local—it’s a national exemplar of how to empower the next generation. By combining education, hands-on experience, and financial incentives, they create pathways to success for youth, regardless of their background.
In summary, UnCommon Construction isn’t just about constructing homes; it’s about constructing futures filled with promise and opportunity. Through their innovative model, they’re paving the way for a brighter future, one house and one apprentice at a time.
