At Least 21 Killed in Israeli Airstrikes as Gaza Conflict Intensifies
On Saturday, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza killed at least 21 people, including two children, while a new round of ceasefire negotiations was underway in Qatar. This latest wave of violence, which struck multiple locations across Gaza, further escalates the ongoing war, now entering its 15th month.
Hospital staff from Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, reported that airstrikes hit a car, a house, and civilians on the street. The images from the scene were harrowing: a young boy sobbed over the body of his father, while a woman lay weeping over a wrapped corpse.
Meanwhile, the Civil Defense, affiliated with Gaza’s Hamas-run government, confirmed the destruction of a residential area in Gaza City, behind the Saraya complex, resulting in at least five deaths.
In total, over the course of Saturday evening, Israeli airstrikes took the lives of three people in Bureij and three others in Deir al-Balah, located in central Gaza. One of the victims was a child. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that in the past 24 hours, at least 59 people were killed, with more than 270 others wounded.
Israeli Military’s Targets and Actions in Gaza
According to Israel’s military, the airstrikes targeted Hamas militants, claiming a hit near Salah al-Din in southern Gaza and another strike on a vehicle in Deir al-Balah. The Israeli Defence Forces also responded to a Hamas projectile fired near the Erez crossing, though there were no reported injuries in that incident.
The ongoing conflict, which started with Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in the deaths of around 45,717 Palestinians, with the majority being civilians, including women and children. These figures have been confirmed by Gaza’s Health Ministry, which also stated that many bodies remain buried under rubble or in areas that emergency responders cannot access.
Israel continues to assert that it targets only militant groups, blaming Hamas for civilian casualties due to the group’s use of dense residential areas as hideouts.
Ceasefire Efforts Amid Growing Casualties
As the violence rages on, indirect ceasefire talks are once again underway in Qatar. These discussions are being mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, and have seen numerous false starts. Despite this, Hamas has confirmed that discussions resumed on Friday and emphasised its commitment to reaching an agreement, although the situation remains fragile.
One of the key aspects of these talks is the fate of hostages. Over 100 hostages, taken during the October 7 attacks, remain in Gaza, and some families have been rallying for months, urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to broker a ceasefire agreement to bring their loved ones home.
A heartbreaking video released by Hamas on Saturday featured Israeli soldier Liri Albag, who has been held captive for more than 450 days. Speaking under duress, she expressed her despair, marking the start of a new year spent in captivity.
Humanitarian Crisis Escalates in Gaza
The toll on Gaza’s infrastructure has been severe. With over 90% of Gaza’s population displaced due to Israel’s military actions, many have sought refuge in overcrowded shelters. As winter sets in, the cold weather is worsening conditions, with children among the casualties due to exposure. Gaza’s Health Ministry also reported that Indonesian Hospital has been rendered non-operational due to Israeli strikes, leaving more of the population without access to medical care.
The humanitarian situation is dire, with hospitals overwhelmed and public health systems in ruins. The ongoing siege on Gaza’s northern region has also cut off the remaining medical services, making it even more difficult for civilians to receive care or supplies.
The War’s Toll on Both Sides
The conflict, now the deadliest in recent history between Israel and Hamas, continues to take its toll on both sides. Israel’s military has claimed to have killed around 17,000 Hamas militants, but providing evidence of these claims has been difficult. For Israel, the priority remains to destroy Hamas, but with their forces engaging in urban warfare, casualties on both sides remain high, and the civilian population is bearing the brunt of the violence.
In the West Bank, Israeli military operations continue, with a recent incident resulting in the death of an 18-year-old Palestinian. This adds to the growing number of casualties in the West Bank, which Palestinian health officials say has surpassed 800 Palestinians since October 7. Despite Israeli claims that most of the casualties are militants, the numbers also include youths and civilians not involved in direct confrontations.
A Fragile Ceasefire in Lebanon
In addition to the violence in Gaza, the conflict has spilled over into Lebanon, where a fragile ceasefire with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has been holding for over a month. However, with tensions still high, experts believe the 60-day deadline for this ceasefire may not be met. The situation in southern Lebanon remains precarious, and clashes have occurred almost daily since the Gaza war began.
The Global Response and Future Outlook
As the conflict shows no signs of ending soon, the international community is grappling with how best to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The United Nations and various human rights organisations have repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and for both sides to abide by international law to protect civilian lives.
Despite the ongoing negotiations, Prime Minister Netanyahu has been steadfast in his position to continue military operations in Gaza until Hamas is fully dismantled. However, the ongoing loss of life and widespread suffering is raising questions about the long-term feasibility of this approach.
For those looking to understand the complexities of this war, the mounting toll, and the future of ceasefire talks, it’s clear that any lasting peace agreement will require compromise from both Israel and Hamas.
