Keir Starmer and the Illusion of “International Law”: Why Sovereignty Matters More Than Ever

Date:

Keir Starmer, the leader of the UK Labour Party, often champions a “rules-based international order” as a cornerstone of global diplomacy. Yet, his stance reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of international affairs. The reality is that international law is an oxymoron—a collection of agreements between consenting nations, with no independent judges, global enforcers, or overarching authorities. Each nation is sovereign, and the idea that global law can control independent states is a delusion.

The growing obsession with international rules, particularly among the UK’s political elite, is having disastrous effects on our national interests. From immigration crises to Net Zero targets, these decisions are driven by an ideology that disregards reality. Starmer, along with other political figures, seems blind to the true nature of global politics and how international agreements can often be manipulated by rogue states. It’s time to confront the truth: we need a return to sovereignty and realpolitik, not misguided idealism.

The Myth of “International Law” and Its Consequences

At the heart of the rules-based system is an idea that the world operates on an even playing field where international law is paramount. But this is simply not the case. International law lacks enforcement power and is primarily shaped by agreements between states. The absence of a global police force means that nations follow agreements only when it benefits them. Rogue states like Russia, China, and Iran routinely ignore international treaties when it serves their interests.

Yet, politicians like Keir Starmer continue to insist that the world operates according to a legal framework that does not exist in practice. This utopian worldview only weakens Britain’s position in global affairs.

The UK’s Struggle with Globalisation

A major flaw in the current system is Britain’s attempt to play by rules that no longer apply. During the age of Pax Britannica, the British Empire shaped the international order. We set the rules, enforced global commerce, and dictated the structure of global politics. The first wave of globalisation was driven by British power, and it worked well for us.

Today, however, the world has changed. Globalisation has transformed, and China and India have emerged as dominant economic forces. The UK’s attempts to cling to outdated ideas about global governance and its role in the international system are holding the nation back. We’re outdated in our thinking, relying on a system that no longer serves our interests.

The Damage Done by the “Rules-Based System”

The ideological obsession with international law has created real-world consequences. From immigration policies to foreign relations, our political leaders are compromising national interests in favour of international ideals that no longer serve Britain’s best interests.

  1. Immigration Crisis: The UK has seen record-breaking immigration in recent years, with net migration reaching nearly a million in one year. This surge is largely driven by the political class’s commitment to upholding international agreements on human rights, despite the toll this takes on local communities. The generosity of foreigners can no longer be our default stance, yet international law binds the UK to uphold these values, even at the expense of its own citizens.

  2. Chagos Islands: One of the most egregious examples of the failure of international law is Britain’s handling of the Chagos Islands. The islands were illegally removed from British control to make way for a US military base, and now, international actors—who do not respect British sovereignty—are exploiting the situation. China, North Korea, Russia, and Iran benefit from undermining Britain’s control over the islands, with little regard for international law when it suits their needs.

  3. Net Zero Agenda: The UK has taken an aggressive stance on the Net Zero project, driven by international agreements to decarbonise the global economy. However, despite our efforts, Britain’s emissions make up a tiny fraction of global CO2 output. Meanwhile, nations like China and India continue to ramp up their carbon emissions without facing the same pressures. Our commitment to the international Net Zero project is an economic disaster for the UK, transferring wealth and jobs to nations that are not playing by the same rules.

  4. World Health Organisation (WHO): During the COVID-19 pandemic, the UK’s adherence to the WHO protocols led to devastating lockdowns and the economic chaos that followed. While other countries ignored these guidelines, the UK dutifully implemented every directive from the WHO, resulting in economic loss, unnecessary restrictions, and the ballooning national debt. It was a choice driven by political elites who preferred to appease international bureaucracies rather than act in the best interest of their own citizens.

The Real Consequences of Ignoring Sovereignty

The continued prioritisation of international agreements over national sovereignty is not just impractical—it’s dangerous. The UK’s political class, driven by virtue-signalling and global ambitions, is ignoring the fact that sovereign nations must put their own people first. The idea of “global governance” is a myth that only serves to undermine our autonomy and economic security.

  • National Prosperity: The UK is seeing its prosperity diminish as international law dictates our policies. Whether it’s the restrictions of Net Zero, the pressure on immigration, or our adherence to global health standards, the global elites are profiting, while the British people are left to shoulder the economic burden.

  • Loss of Control: By following the dictates of international bodies like the WHO, the UN, and others, the UK is slowly losing control over its own affairs. The political class needs to remember that they are accountable to the British people, not international organisations with no genuine stake in our future.

Time for a Wake-Up Call: Embrace Sovereignty

It’s time for the UK to face reality and embrace its sovereignty once more. Politicians like Keir Starmer need to realise that international law does not have the power to govern independent nations. Sovereignty must take precedence, and British politics needs to prioritise the welfare of our people, not global ambitions.

  • Strong Borders, Strong Economy: The UK needs to take control of its own borders and policies without the interference of international agreements that undermine national interests. Immigration must be redefined based on national need, not international pressures.

  • Sustainable, National Priorities: The UK should commit to a more realistic, self-sustaining approach to climate change and other international projects. While cooperation with other nations is necessary, the UK cannot afford to take on the burden alone, especially when others do not play by the same rules.

  • Accountability to the People: The government must recognise that their loyalty should lie with British citizens, not distant international bodies. The electorate must demand that politicians put the country’s interests above those of global elites.

Conclusion: Sovereignty Above All

Keir Starmer and others like him are trapped in an illusion of international law and cooperation that no longer serves the interests of the British people. It’s time to return to realpolitik, where nations prioritise their own sovereignty and interests. The era of deference to international agreements that undermine Britain’s autonomy must come to an end. Sovereignty is not a relic of the past; it is the future of a strong, independent nation.
