New CEO Tina-Marie Gulley: Revitalising Ada Developers Academy for a New Era

Date:

Ada Developers Academy has long been a beacon of hope for underrepresented individuals in tech, paving the way for successful careers in software development. However, recent challenges have led the academy to pivot significantly. With the appointment of Tina-Marie Gulley as the new CEO, Ada is ready to overcome setbacks and expand its reach, integrating artificial intelligence into its training.

A Journey of Resilience: Overcoming Setbacks

Founded over a decade ago, Ada Developers Academy has trained numerous students for careers in tech. But like many institutions, it faced difficulties during the pandemic.

  • Grant Success: In 2021, Ada received a generous $10 million grant, backed by influential philanthropists like Melinda French Gates and MacKenzie Scott. This funding aimed to expand operations into five U.S. cities.

  • Challenges Ahead: Despite initial success, the program encountered significant hurdles. Reliance on tech partnerships for internships became problematic as companies scaled back hiring post-pandemic. Opportunities dwindled, and Ada was forced to make tough decisions.

  • The Hard Reset: Last year, the academy underwent drastic changes—reducing its workforce from 75 to just 25 employees and halting new admissions temporarily.

A Fresh Start with New Leadership

With Tina-Marie Gulley stepping in as the new CEO, Ada is poised for transformation.

  • Interim to Permanent: Gulley served as the interim CEO since April, bringing with her experience from various Seattle-based companies in marketing and non-profit leadership.

  • Focus on AI and Virtual Learning: Under her leadership, Ada now emphasizes AI in its curriculum, adapting all instruction to a virtual format, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Innovative Programs for Diverse Students

Ada’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity remains strong. The academy offers various programs tailored to different learning styles and needs.

  • Ada Build: This self-directed curriculum allows students to learn at their own pace.

  • Ada Build Live: A six-week virtual course offered during morning or evening hours, catering to different schedules.

  • Ada Core: This comprehensive six-month boot camp includes in-person components and is designed to provide students with hands-on experience through internships.

In total, the academy plans to serve 450 students across its preparatory tracks this year, with around 150 participants in the core program.

Building a Community of Support

Gulley’s vision extends beyond just curriculum updates; it’s about community building.

  • Returning Alumni: Recognising the challenges faced by new graduates during the tech layoffs of 2022, Ada brought alumni back to refresh their skills, incorporating updated AI content into the curriculum.

  • New Partnerships: The academy is expanding its network of partners beyond traditional tech firms. Collaborations now include nonprofits like the Allen Institute for AI, Khan Academy, and Code.org, offering diverse resources and opportunities.

A Commitment to Diversity in Tech

As the landscape of tech education evolves, Gulley is determined to strengthen Ada’s impact locally and nationally.

  • Combatting the DEI Backlash: With the backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, Ada aims to be a champion for these principles in tech.

  • Supporting Other Boot Camps: The preparatory programs are designed to not only feed into Ada Core but also support other boot camps, expanding the reach of Ada’s mission to increase diversity in tech.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future

Gulley’s leadership brings renewed energy and focus to Ada Developers Academy. She envisions a future where:

  • Greater Accessibility: With a commitment to providing education to all, regardless of location, Ada is breaking down barriers in tech education.

  • Strengthened Community: “How can we build community?” Gulley asks. This question drives Ada’s mission to support and uplift underrepresented groups in tech.

  • Adapting to Change: The ability to pivot and adapt is crucial. Ada’s new structure and emphasis on virtual learning and AI ensure it remains relevant and impactful in today’s rapidly changing tech landscape.
