For Um Saber, a mother of six, returning to her hometown of Beit Lahiya was both a relief and a shock. Upon arriving, she found the surrounding area completely destroyed. Like others, she began the difficult task of digging through the debris in search of her missing loved ones.
While many are focusing on finding their family members, others are trying to make temporary shelters from the ruins. The hospital in Beit Lahiya, a crucial lifeline for the community, was also destroyed in the conflict, further deepening the tragedy of the war.

The situation is no better in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, where many families who had fled other areas of Gaza now face new horrors. In Rafah, entire neighbourhoods have been flattened, and some residents have found human remains scattered across the rubble. Mohamed Abu Taha, a Rafah resident, described the scene as “indescribable,” likening it to a horror movie. Amid the ruins, he found parts of his own family home, now nothing more than a pile of concrete and debris.
As Palestinians try to return, they are confronted with the harsh truth: the future remains uncertain. Rebuilding Gaza could take centuries if the Israeli blockade persists, and with many roads and vital infrastructure destroyed, the recovery process is likely to be painfully slow.
