Wesley Snipes on Returning as Blade for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’: “I Didn’t Think Marvel Was Into It”

Date:

Wesley Snipes has long been synonymous with the iconic vampire hunter, Blade. When rumours of his return to the role in a crossover with Deadpool and Wolverine started swirling, fans were ecstatic. Snipes recently opened up about how the idea came about and his initial scepticism, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes of this potential Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) spectacle.

The Unexpected Call from Ryan Reynolds

It all started with a surprising text message from none other than Ryan Reynolds.

Snipes shared, “It started with a text from Ryan Reynolds.” He jokingly added, “I hate this guy. You know, this is a joke. We’ve been playing this for like two decades. We’ve actually liked each other the whole time.”

A Hesitant Yes

Despite the playful banter, Snipes was initially hesitant. “Ryan told me he had an idea, but I was sceptical. It’s very unlikely,” Snipes admitted. “I said, ‘Well, if you can make it happen. Sure. I’ll come and do it.’”

He expressed doubts about whether Marvel and Disney would be interested, especially with Mahershala Ali already cast for the upcoming Blade reboot. “I didn’t think it was possible. I didn’t think he would be able to pull it off. I didn’t think that Marvel was into it. Disney was into it. And also because they had Mahershala, you know, cast for the next upcoming version of it. So, it didn’t make sense to me.”

The Legacy of Blade

Wesley Snipes first donned the iconic leather trench coat and sunglasses as Blade in 1998, directed by Stephen Norrington. The movie was a cult hit, leading to two sequels: Blade II in 2002 and Blade: Trinity in 2004. Snipes’ portrayal of Blade is credited with paving the way for modern superhero films, proving that there was a market for comic book adaptations.

The Blade Reboot

In 2019, Marvel announced that they were working on a Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali. However, the project has faced numerous delays, including the loss of its director, Bassam Tariq, and the writers’ strike. The reboot is now set to be directed by Yann Demange and is scheduled for release on November 7, 2025.

The Potential Crossover: Blade, Deadpool, and Wolverine

The idea of a crossover featuring BladeDeadpool, and Wolverine is tantalising for Marvel fans. Each character brings a unique flavour to the table: Blade’s vampire-hunting intensity, Deadpool’s irreverent humour, and Wolverine’s gruff but honourable persona. If it happens, this crossover could be one of the most exciting events in the MCU.

The Chemistry Between Snipes and Reynolds

Snipes’ playful comments about his relationship with Reynolds hint at great chemistry between the two actors. This dynamic could translate into an engaging and entertaining on-screen partnership. Reynolds, known for his quick wit and charm, has already made Deadpool a beloved character. Adding Snipes’ Blade into the mix could elevate the franchise to new heights.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite his initial scepticism, Snipes seems open to the idea of returning as Blade. The biggest hurdle will be aligning the interests of Marvel, Disney, and the existing plans for the Blade reboot. However, with the right creative vision, it’s not impossible. Marvel has a history of surprising fans with unexpected collaborations and plot twists.

What Fans Can Expect

If this crossover comes to fruition, fans can expect a blend of action, humour, and dark themes. Blade’s serious nature juxtaposed with Deadpool’s comedic antics and Wolverine’s ferocity could create a unique and compelling narrative. This trio’s adventures could explore new dimensions of the MCU, pushing the boundaries of the superhero genre.

Conclusion

While the idea of Wesley Snipes reprising his role as Blade in a crossover with Deadpool and Wolverine might seem far-fetched, it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility. With Ryan Reynolds’ persistence and Snipes’ willingness to return, Marvel fans have a lot to look forward to. As Snipes himself said, “If you can make it happen. Sure. I’ll come and do it.”

BladeDeadpool, and Wolverine together on the big screen? It’s a dream team that could redefine the MCU’s future.
