How PingPod Achieved a $50M Valuation in 5 Years Through Automation

In just five years, our ping pong startup, PingPod, has surged to a $50 million valuation. This journey began in 2019 when I, an equity research analyst at UBS, discovered the challenges of finding places to play table tennis in New York City. That’s when the idea struck me: to create 24/7 on-demand ping pong facilities powered by automation.

Tapping into the Experience Economy

Today, people crave experiences over goods. In urban areas, delivering such experiences can be complex and costly. Our autonomous operating model is the key to unlocking more ping pong facilities in city centres.

We started with a single PingPod in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Today, we have 18 locations across the U.S., and the template for our expansion was set.

What Makes PingPod Unique?

Our model eliminates the need for full-time staff on-site. Here’s how it works:

  • User-Friendly App: Customers book their slots through our app.
  • Secure Access: They unlock the facility with a unique code on their smartphone.
  • Automated Operations: This reduces operational costs and increases availability.

Our focus has always been on providing an exceptional customer experience, which led us to develop our own software stack for PingPod.

Expanding Beyond Ping Pong: Enter PodPlay Technologies

In 2023, we established PodPlay Technologies, a SaaS subsidiary that allows other venues to adopt our technology. With over 70 locations signed up—including sports like billiards, soccer, and golf simulators—PodPlay is expanding rapidly.

The Boom in Experience-Driven Venues

As the desire for experiences grows, we’ve positioned ourselves perfectly. Before PingPod, New York’s table tennis options were limited to either large “eatertainment” facilities or outdated specialized venues.

PingPod fills this gap by providing:

  • Convenient locations
  • A comfortable atmosphere

Cutting Costs with Autonomous Operations

Our autonomous model has revolutionised how we operate:

  • Reduced Labour Costs: We can run our venues with minimal staff, decreasing overhead.
  • Greater Availability: Most Pods are open 24/7, maximising use.
  • High Operating Margins: Our top-performing Pods achieve over 40% operating margins.

This approach solves the fundamental challenge of urban location economics, allowing us to thrive even in high-rent areas.

Prioritising Customer Safety

Safety and security are paramount at PingPod. Here’s how we ensure a secure environment:

  • Locked Access: Pods are locked by default, accessible only with a reservation.
  • Credit Card Security: Reservations ensure we have customer details for any necessary follow-ups.
  • Video Monitoring: Our dedicated team in the Philippines monitors all locations, providing an extra layer of security.

After five years and hundreds of thousands of hours played, we confidently affirm our model works well.

Creating a Seamless Experience

We believe in gamifying the player experience. Our Pods include:

  • Integrated Audio and Visuals: Elevating every match.
  • Instant Replay Features: Players can relive their best moments instantly.
  • Social Media Sharing: Videos can be shared directly, enhancing community engagement.

In 2024, customers are on track to utilise the instant replay feature over 100,000 times—a testament to the appeal of our offering.

Since launching PingPod, we’ve welcomed over 100,000 players, creating a vibrant community that connects people through shared experiences.
