Mt. Vernon Community Rallies to Support Coach Eric Bulmahn in Cancer Battle

Date:

The spirit of the Mt. Vernon community was palpable as friends, family, and former players gathered to support Eric Bulmahn, a beloved former volleyball coach diagnosed with a rare and aggressive stomach cancer. This gathering was not just about sports; it was a heartfelt display of love and unity that transcended the volleyball court.

A Heartfelt Gathering

As I entered the mezzanine outside the Mt. Vernon gymnasium, I could feel the energy in the air. The junior varsity match was in full swing, but the real event was unfolding in the hearts of those gathered. Friends, family, and former players had come from near and far, some even flying in from places like New Mexico, to show their support for Eric Bulmahn.

Who Was There?

  • Former Players: Many athletes who had played under Eric’s guidance were present, sharing stories and memories.
  • Family Members: Eric’s wife, Monica, and daughters, Jaclyn and Victoria, were there to receive the community’s warmth.
  • Supportive Friends: Fans and supporters filled the lower bowl of the gym, many wearing “Eric Strong” shirts.

The Diagnosis and Community Response

Eric’s diagnosis is tough—he has been given 12-16 months to live if chemotherapy is effective. Despite this heavy news, the outpouring of love has been nothing short of overwhelming.

Community Initiatives

  • Notecards for Memories: A table was set up where attendees could write down positive memories or stories about Eric. These would be compiled into a book for him.
  • GoFundMe Campaign: A campaign established for the Bulmahn family has raised nearly $37,800 toward a $40,000 goal.

Emotional Reflections

Jaclyn Bulmahn, Eric’s daughter, described the support as “overwhelming, but in the best way possible.” Victoria echoed these sentiments, stating, “We have felt all the love. It’s been incredible.”

Eric’s Impact on Volleyball

Eric’s contributions to Mt. Vernon volleyball are significant. During his eight-year tenure, he transformed the program, leading it from a mere nine wins to a 24-9 record as interim coach in 2014. Under his leadership, the team secured two sectional championships and achieved a remarkable 195-60 overall record.

A Legacy of Success

  • Revitalized Program: Turned a struggling team into champions.
  • Lasting Influence: Players remember his dedication on and off the court.

Players have fond memories of Eric, highlighting his drive and commitment. “He always wanted us to do our best, reminding us that we represented not just ourselves but Mt. Vernon,” shared Sophie Schultz, a 2020 graduate.

The Heart of the Community

Even those who didn’t play directly for Eric felt his influence. Aubry Dowling, a junior defensive specialist, grew up attending his camps and credits him for her passion for volleyball. His attendance at middle school matches inspired many young players, creating a community atmosphere that felt like family.

Building Connections

  • Team Dinners: Eric often took the team out for dinners, fostering a strong bond.
  • Community Engagement: He encouraged players to support one another and attend middle school games.

The event underscored the close-knit relationships Eric built. Nearly all of Jaclyn and Victoria’s senior-year teammates were present, along with several of Eric’s former club players, some now in their 30s.

The Future: Eric Bulmahn Mt. Vernon Legacy Fund

To further honour Eric’s contributions, his brother Mark announced the establishment of the Eric Bulmahn Mt. Vernon Legacy Fund. This fund aims to support future generations of Mt. Vernon athletes.

Fund Details

  • Initial Donation: $25,000 has been pledged to kickstart the fund.
  • Matching Initiative: The Mark and Connie Bulmahn Family Donor Advised Fund will match donations dollar-for-dollar for the first year, potentially raising $75,000.

Mark stated, “This is a heartfelt way to honour Eric’s dedication to the Mt. Vernon school system where he inspired so many.”

A Message of Hope

Monica Bulmahn spoke to the crowd, sharing Eric’s peace with his diagnosis. “He trusts God’s plan,” she said, emphasising their family’s faith during this challenging time.

Community Support Continues

Monica’s heartfelt message resonated with everyone: “Please continue to pray for him and our family. We feel the love, and we love all of you.”

Conclusion: The Power of Community

The event at Mt. Vernon was more than a show of support for Eric Bulmahn; it was a celebration of community, love, and resilience.

As we rally together in tough times, let’s remember that the bonds we create through sports and friendship are powerful.

Eric Bulmahn’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us all that community matters.
